Check Stopping Distances: In icy conditions, your stopping distance can be up to 10 times longer than on dry roads.

Smooth Inputs: Avoid sudden braking, sharp steering, or rapid acceleration to prevent skidding. If you do skid, steer gently into it and avoid slamming on the brakes.

See and Be Seen: It is a legal requirement in the UK to clear all snow and ice from your windows and lights before setting off. Don't forget to clear the roof, as snow sliding off can hazard other drivers.

Gear Up: Use a high gear to pull away (like second gear) to help avoid wheel spin on slippery surfaces. 

Watch for Black Ice: Be particularly careful in shaded areas, on bridges, and on overpasses, which tend to freeze first.

T - Top-up: Ensure you have enough fuel/charge, oil, and winter-grade screen wash.

R - Rest: Plan regular stops every two hours to stay alert in demanding conditions.

I - Inspect: Check that your tyres have at least 3mm of tread for better grip in snow.

P - Prepare: Pack an emergency kit including a warm blanket, de-icer, scraper, torch, and a fully charged phone.

If conditions are severe, the safest option is to stay home and delay your trip until the roads have been gritted.
